iPhone 4S

Apple's first press conference without Jobs on the 4th left many yearning for more, and maybe even Jobs himself. In an usual Apple manner, they patted themselves on the back by announcing their achievements and peeved many that wanted the next awesome iPhone announcement. Instead they were greeted by angry investors and fans alike, with stock prices falling as much as 5% after the 4S announcement. (but they recovered since..

In other news, they announced price cut for the Nano, with 16 GB coming in at only $20 more than the 8GB version at $149. (i'm irked that apple is charging $100 extra for a 16 GB upgrade to the 32gig iPhone 4S while it can be much cheaper to upgrade the memory.. :p

The event took place at 2 a.m. Korea Standard Time. (it was a very interesting time) At 2:54ish a.m. KST, Apple announced the iPhone4S!

i thought, "ok.. that's cool, we were expecting a cheaper iPhone, and let's just hope that's what this is.."

Less than a minute into that announcement, the dreaded word: "It has the A5 chip! Doh! Doh! Doh! ["how will they differentiate the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 5, if they have the same chip?" was the question running through my mind.. the answer: don't worry your pretty little head about it.. :p

newly announced and booed iPhone 4S
A5 dual core processor (same one in the iPad and a great proc)
8 megapixel camera @ 3264 x 2448 but backside illuminated CMOS! (73 percent more light and faster! 1/3 quicker!) f2.4!
A new antenna (which they should've had in the first place!
14.4 Mbps down HSDPA (instead of 21 Mbps HSDPA+ oh well) upload is still at 5.8 Mbps and no LTE (more on that later)
A World Phone!
1080p HD video recording.. meh~ (too big! a file size)
and of course SIRI!

And it keeps the same dimensions :/ but also keeps the awesome retina display, although i wish for a slightly bigger 4.0 display that goes up to 720p.. oh well..

the phone will drop in 7 countries on the 14th,  the United States, Canada, Australia, U.K. France, Germany and Japan.

Korea, once again got the shaft (perhaps due to Sammy) and didn't even make it to the second round of countries slated for the 28th release.

Overall, fanboys and gals in 70 countries will at least get a chance at a pre-order (and most likely get their hands on the phone) before the end of the year. (due to less than usual fanfare for the product - my estimation)

Contents ripped from engadget liveblog (since it's now stable, unlike during the mayhem of the keynote :p

My Impressions and thoughts on the event

My first "live" apple announcement, and I really didn't think too much of the event. actually, i was raging along with the masses, and the feeling of being rejected at seeing the "iPhone Not 5" as CNET put it, only served to fuel the rage.
I tuned into the live broadcast by the Buzz out Loud / CNET special coverage team, shout out to Molly, Brian and Steve! btw!

I was utterly disappointed, as i wanted to see the svelte, tear drop shaped iPhone 5. But after the dust settled, and went though what i call crappy fifth of October, i'm full on w/ apple's new....ish phone.

"iPhone Not 5" ;)

To me the iPhone 4S experience, (at least on paper) is like going on a blind date with a supposedly really HOT supermodel. with your expectations above the clouds, there's no way to hide the disappointment.
when you arrive, to find your blind date to be a pretty hot model, not the Supermodel of your friend's description.. But during the course of the date, you learn that, not only is she good looking, she's also a great cook, loves basketball, actually has a personality and isn't a bore to talk to ;)

Yes she maybe as high maintenance as other hot chicks, but she is a model too after all right? ; Alright, enough of my fantasy driven analogy,

Bottom line for me: not sure if i like to make the 2 year commitment with a product that fell way short of the hype that myself and and rest of the fan community built up, especially if the next generation is only hopefully 9 short months away. but that being said, newly announced iPhone seems like a solid phone, and i actually hate the trend of smart phones getting bigger. (Nexus Prime sounds awesome, decked out with the latest tech. But would i like to keep a curved bulge that houses a 4.65 inch screen in my pocket? "oh sorry, i'm not happy to see you and no it's not a wide and "thin" banana in my pocket :p

canned, seasoned perilla leaves
My Thoughts: shell maybe dated, but the beauty is on the inside right? ;)
i actually like the form factor of the iPhone. even if it looks like  -->

being a smartphone-less IT enthusiast, (yes the irony) i carry a wi-bro egg (for wireless broadband on the go), 2G phone, my iPad 2, and a galaxy 070 phone (wifi phone anywhere i get wifi) here in Korea, which sort of acts as my psudo-smartphone, The galaxy has a nice screen, but is a tad big. and newer android phones are approaching 5 inches in screen real estate, but i have an iPad, so i don't need a bigger screen for my phone. (it'll never be an all-in one device!) i want it to be easily pocketable, so the iPhone form factor works for me. I could've lived with a bump in screen size and resolution, to say, about 4 inches (edge to edge screen) and at least 720p HD screen, but neither panned out. But i think Apple guessed correctly, and is not a deal breaker.

while i'm not sure about the ram, A5 chip rocks, new f2.4 lens w/ back-lit CMOS rocks (if it works like Sony's Exmor R CMOS) could care less, and actually would rather have 5 meg pix sensor over the 8, for pixel density sake, but whatever.
one-stop world phone feature, hopefully a better antenna, so my calls won't drop every other minute :/
and of course SIRI - which apple will kill support for all non-4S phones when it comes out. (classic rotten apple move..)

Missing parts

Bigger screen for one, but i covered that
LTE, or 4G
this is a big one, but i could understand why Apple decided not to include it. I personally thought the 3 month delay was to include the LTE radio, but i should've known it was the apple way, to not to include the latest technology, before it becomes mainstream (sometimes). adding the LTE radio would've jacked up the battery consumption, and not exactly the most elegant solution, having to switch between LTE and 3G as the network build out will still take some time.
HDSPA is a feeble attempt at matching LTE, (HDSPA+ would've been better) but whatever, i'll just use wifi to download bigger files :p
slimmer oh well.. could iPhone really encroach into iTouch territory? would apple want to cannibalize two divisions? doubtful..

Bang & Olufsen EatSet 3i
Putting my money where my mouth is

as of last night, i was going to pre-order the 32 gig in white as my second attempt at a smartphone (first was a Droid2, which i returned for a $35 fee after messing w/ its crap-tastic-ness for couple days :p.
Today's a new day and now i'm thinking of buying the 64 gig in White :p (freakin $399 w/ contract! but i'm already running low on my iPad2 32G storage, and hate shuffling things around for the sake of storage management. (my audio takes up less than 10 gigs, rest are videos and apps. but with a better camera, for photos and video, i have a feeling i'll need more storage :p i could find worse ways to squander $100..

i was thinking of at least pre-ordering the phone and waiting for the Nexus Prime announcement to drop before making my decision, but since the event has been canceled. i'll just not worry about it :D

Update: now apple site shows 1-2 week on pre-orders, not sure if that means 1-2 weeks from now, or from shipping date.. :/

And i want the $199 Bang & Olufsen EarSet 3i, pricey, but i've freakin wanted those buds forever. besides, i think it'll work well w/ my radio gigs too :D

Postponed Samsung Nexus Prime / Ice Cream Sandwich announcement

coming.. later
The October 11th Unpacked event to announce the new 4.65 inch curved smartphone, Nexus Prime has been postponed.
the reason, according to Sammy rep:

A Samsung spokesperson issued a follow up statement to CNET, confirming speculation that the reveal was postponed out of respect, following the passing of Steve Jobs. "We believe this is not the right time to announce a new product as the world expresses tribute to Steve Jobs's passing," the spokesperson explained.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/10/07/samsung-and-google-postpone-ice-cream-sandwich-and-galaxy-nexus/

speculations abound,
was it out of respect of Steve Jobs? or
because they just weren't ready? who really knows..

http://www.edaily.co.kr/news/NewsRead.edy?newsid=01105366596410952&SCD=DD41&DCD=A00306

eitherway, it seems week of disappointing unveiling.
apple, only because anything less than iPhone 5 would've peeved off the fanboys, and Sammy since Nexus Prime announcement on the 11th would've gave those on the fence, like myself, an opportunity to decide between the iPhone 4S and the latest android superphone: Nexus Prime. well, i guess my preorder for the white 32G 4S is still a go :D

RIP Mr. Jobs

i'll let others say their peace. Rest In Peace

tbs eFM Weekend Edition: IT News 10/02

tbs eFM Weekend Edition: IT News 10/02 (just filling in for 2 weeks before heading to the States for 2 weeks)

- original script - (some of the contents were skipped due to 8 minute broadcast window)

Walter                  Now moving on to more in-depth discussion on technology, there was a big announcement in the tech world, last week, an American Online retailer came out and made a huge announcement, something about a new tablet right?

Jason                     last wed, amazon.com unveiled next generation family of kindle products. for those that aren't familiar, kindle was an e-book reader that used special type of display called e-ink, which is way easier on the eyes than your typical lcd screen.

I say was.. because the kindle line, now has a full blown 7 inch non-tabletkindle fire (Amazon.com is calling it a kindle device and not a tablet.) that runs on a modified version of android 2.3 froyo.. custom made to suit the end to end experience amazon .com wants to create for their consumers.

walter:                 (your comment on the tablet) what is all the fuss about?

jason:
-       tablets are a multimedia consumption devices that offer bigger screens than your smartphones but are smaller than laptops or netbooks.
-       As most of us know, Apple reinvented the category, and dominates the landscape.
-       It is a lot easier to take with you than lugging around a notebook, and can still do some productivity work. (wrote this part on my iPad, which I hated doing btw.. need me a mac book air to replace my iPad)  - better for videos imo..
-       other manufacturers have tried their hand with an android os based device, but aren’t exactly doing well...
-       Many in tech circles are hoping the new device will be the iPad killer, even if they aren't even in the same product category.

Walter:                                could you give us the brief rundown on specs?

brief specs,
-       7 inch ips screen with 1024 x 600.
-       dual core processor, but only 8 gigs of storage and around 7.5 hours of battery life.
-       its basically a stripped down playbook by RIM.
-       And by stripped down, I mean it has no hdmi out, no camera, and no sd card slot,
-       so the device will lack expandability, but it is a cloud based device so it will serve its purpose. at least according to amazon.

walter: it is not a typical tablet, and they are trying to go as wireless as possible right?

Jason
-       The only real use for the usb cable is for charging the device. (well that and rooting according to some articles I read)
-       Utilize Amazon’s whisper net to sync data from the cloud. Lot more convenient than iTunes, is the plan :D

Walter: no wires is great! And they also announced an interesting approach to browsing by utilizing the cloud?

jason
-       Good portion of the keynote was dedicated to explaining the technology behind improving the web browsing experience on their tablet device.
-       the device will be bundled with their proprietary browser called Silk.
o   it addresses one of my pet peeves found in today’s tablets. sloooooooow browsing.
-       i really dislike browsing on my apple tablet, because safari is horrid and slow.
-       amazon hopes to alleviate the speed issue by caching optimized versions of accessed pages on their cloud storage, to offer less strain on the tablet end, (client).
-       Silk is designed to split the processing overhead between the Kindle fire and Amazon EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud) where the EC2 does the heavy lifting of optimizing web content for the tablet, and tablet just renders it.

Walter. But if the web is cached, then won't there be privacy concerns?

Jason.
-       most definitely! even https connection will be cached in theory, which is a definite nono.
-       so Amazon.com is including an option to disable the feature if privacy is an issue for the end user.
-       it will be interesting to see how it is implemented.

[skip if no time] Walter: and the announcement sent shockwaves through the industry especially in the tough to survive market, with the recent 49day-long life of HP Touchpad.

[jason.
interesting how much impact that single event may have had on the tablet pricing. and it is evident in the pricing trends. Some call it the fallout from the recent announcement.
-       Rim recently announced temporary $200 price cut for the playbook, until Oct 8th resulting in 299 price for its 16 gig version.
-       And just yesterday, us retailer best buy announced permanent $200 price cut for the HTC flyer.
Amazon.com is actually losing $50 per tablet sold, but much like videogame console subsidy models, they are betting on making it back through content sales. and they will.]

Walter: so what do you think? an iPad killer?

Jason
-       nope, but an interesting competitor for a different segment.
-       it will be a great tablet device that would take tablet computing mainstream!
-       and some consumers may realize that a $200 multimedia device maybe good enough, esp in today’s economy.
-       amazon, unlike other tablet makers already have a great eco system. and that will give them an enormous edge for their entry into the tablet market.
-       I think it’ll be a success, and at least for this generation, both devices won’t really infringe on the other.
o   But it will be interesting to see what direction the kindle fire will take in its evolution.
-       However, that does not mean it won’t kill off other android based tablets by other manufacturers.
-       HP Touchpad killed the price point for android tablets; Kindle Fire will further erode it by leveraging their end to end experience. (not to mention the $199 price tag) [If you can’t stand that heat, get out of the kitchen!]

[Just prior to the announcement, there was a rumor that the fire is a stripped down playbook since amazon had to launch before the crucial holiday season. And there just maybe a beefier tablet to be announced after the first quarter, so we will see.]

outsider

2011.06.05

outside looking in by choice or according to the situation?

i'm still wandering around, looking for a place to call home.
not as romantic as it sounds. being a vagabond is kinda rough.
the destination? always, unknown..

i'll keep wandering around until i find a spot to call home.
but the question remains, did i do this out of my own volition, or is there a greater purpose?
somewhere along the voyage, the purpose had be muddled, took a life of its own, then forgotten again.
but as the definition dictates: a vagabond wanders, so i still do.

seeking a place to rest, but i leave for the next, just after recharging. [Nakashima Mika - You'd be so nice to come home to] comes to mind.. my little wish..
it'd be nice to know where i'm going, but i suppose i'll know when i get there.
until then, i must trek through the wilderness, take loneliness as my best friend, as i'm destined to embark on this one-man mission.

the invitation to settle is quite inviting, but something within urges me forth
guess i haven't found the right one.
so while praying for the last day as a vagabond to come, i must still fulfill my role until something new pops up.
i can't get to my destination if i just settled here..

NBA finals

Already June!!

anyway, I disliked the Heat, only because they assembled their Eastern Championship team. but oddly, i don't hate them as much as Boston.

and actually in all honesty, whatever :p

I'll root for the Mavs, but i'll savor every awesome play from all the players.
and if Miami wins as predicted by the "experts" so be it :D
